Altman ensemble.

And fortunately, because this film could really use the broad cast. If the setting, characters and zeitgeist are not captivating, you at least still have the variety of different characters who keep encountering each other.

I have no interest in the music anyway, the acts are not all super professional either. For a film that lasts 160 minutes and has quite a lot of musical numbers, that is quite a problem to get over. I read in other reviews that it's not that bad because there's enough going on during the performance, but I didn't notice that much.

Characters didn't seem very natural to me either, I found most moments to be quite thick. So there is little guidance to be found there either. What saves this film a little bit is that the setting itself starts to come alive. A fairly vibrant town where many characters intersect, Altman certainly manages to capture that feeling.

But that's too poor for 160 minutes of film in which there is little else of interest.

1.5*

A film that I don't really know what to think of. There is so much in it and at the same time it is so distant. I recently saw the music documentary series Countrymusic. Then you will recognize many country artists in the characters from the movie Nashville. Although it's more of a reference than an actual rendition of them. Moreover, these are not existing songs in the film, the actors wrote and sang many songs themselves. As a music lover, that doesn't do it justice. If I want to create the atmosphere, I don't have enough of Nashville to be able to get absorbed in it. It's so terribly American with an overdose of stars and stripes.

What is good is the constant flow of images and sounds. The political campaign has also almost become a kind of background music instead of a real storyline. But after a while you get used to that cinematic chaos. It is a babbling brook with characters coming and going. It doesn't really stick and the film characters are not very interesting. The film is mainly a satirical criticism of the somewhat hypocritical glitter and glamor of American society with the facades of showbiz and politics. But it lacks the necessary spice. Unfortunately I don't have much use for this.

Slow author's cinema that gradually reveals its dark sides. I really wanted to see a film set in the country environment of Nashville and this served me well. It is a long film and the storylines require some attention, but it gradually becomes more and more interesting. It is above all a realistic drama whose level of reality - just like in real life - often resembles a tragicomedy. Each person is busy realizing their own ambitions and uses the other person to do so, simply put. The music was prominent and well received. The ending fits entirely into the turbulent political times in which the USA found itself. It was a bit awkward that the singing party was simply continued. But perhaps they had a different view on this in the seventies.
