Starts promising, but gets less and less after the first part, to eventually raise the level again with a dramatic ending . Film actually lasts just a bit too long with some unnecessary storylines that barely add anything, so that afterwards you mainly wonder what the point was the makers wanted to make. Also somewhat disturbing: Mudbound is crammed with all kinds of voice overs that hardly contribute anything with their blurry lyrics. Above all a typical Netflix production: rock solid, carefully made with some nice shots of the landscapes, but with this basic material (and probably a higher budget) you could have really had a blast of a movie. The acting is also fine. It's nice to see Hedlund and Mulligan doing a good job here, but it's especially Banks who gives the event extra cachet with his contribution of the grieving grandfather of the family. Had the rest of Mudbound been as memorable as his contribution, we wouldn't have forgotten this production as soon as it will be now.

Gripping film about racism and discrimination in the southern United States. The story takes place roughly 70 years ago, but is in fact still current. After all, although the outward appearance is now a lot less than then, the racism in everyday life is still palpable.

Although I have seen countless films on this theme, I will never get used to people treating each other in this way, based solely on narrow-minded prejudices.

Also in this film, in which emotions regularly run high, there are countless scenes that set you off the map. That's why I really like the final scene. Despite its simplicity, it gave me some satisfaction.

What is 'Mudbound' about?
About what it feels like to be black in a white world.
About what it feels like to be the son of a cruel father.
About what it feels like to be the wife of a sulking man.
About what it feels like to be the mother of a closely-connected litter.
About what that feels like: a war that continues.
About what that feels like: the time that stands still while the world spins and life spins.
About what that feels like: the earth, the mud, the land, property.
About talkers and silencers, love and hate, sadness and alcohol, community and loneliness, work and idleness.
About ...
Uhm, what is 'Mudbound' not about?

It is a penetrating portrait, a tragedy in which the full complexity of life reveals itself. Characters no longer wrestle one problem at a time, but wage a continuous battle against a spectrum of intrinsic and extrinsic demons. They fight against themselves, against the other, against the zeitgeist and against the elements – against a world that damned to give in even an inch. And each and every one in their own language, told from their own perspective, filmed from an unusual proximity to the characters and the tides.

(Could Dee Rees have ignored the ceremonial Ku Klux Klan meeting and the rather contrived plot? Sure. It would even have made the film more impactful. Nevertheless, ' shows. Mudbound' striking how people feel bound to their roots, their origin, their environment, their climate…to the mud that chains them to the earth.)

3.5*
