This film tells the story of young Temudzhin Khan. Stays good.

Beginning of a trilogy that would never become one. That was lucky for this film, because it nicely avoids the classic biopic structure. No rise & fall perils, but a stretched run-up to the rise of Genghis Khan.

Movie looks nice and has a nice soundtrack. Both contribute to the diligent character of the film, which is further enhanced by Asano's rough acting. Not usually a fan of actors who play characters of a different nationality, but Asano was just made for this role.

Mongol may not be the most creative or striking film, but it has no weaknesses and is easy to convince thanks to an original angle. As far as I'm concerned that sequel will never come, this movie is good as it is.

4.0* and a extended review

Mme.

In terms of cinematography, the film is absolutely top notch, admittedly. Especially the beautiful images of the landscapes are worth bonuses. The forests, the mountains, the snowy areas are all beautifully and beautifully portrayed. Nice use of color too.

In terms of decoration, it was a bit clunky, especially because those large rugs are clearly heavy, and you can see that in the actors. The beginning is long-winded, and the film is just boring after a certain point. The acting performance of Asano is good, but the rest was not very strong.

Story is also just not interesting enough to follow, nice that the battles are better designed and the images are certainly beautiful. It was just all a bit boring. Indeed, the step from slave to powerful leader also went quickly and actually came completely out of the blue.

Seen it quite some time ago, when given a grade but no comment written. Saw it again last night and immediately had a better feeling about the film than the first time.

Where the first time I stumbled a bit about the hard, sometimes taciturn character of the film, I can now put that into perspective much better the second time and I think the hard and ruthless portrayal of life on the Mongolian steppe is excellent. Although the arranged marriage went a little differently, as did his father's killer who outlawed him and hunted him for years, it doesn't matter much. The nuance and details are different, but the fact that Temujin's life was fraught with trouble from age 9 to adulthood is true, as is his outlaw status. Something he caused himself after killing his brother after an argument. Although portrayed as forward-thinking, good to his fighters and lenient with his already pregnant wife, it does appear in a different light for me with such tidbits. An image that is perhaps more beautiful than it really was, partly due to the knowledge that the battles and cities fought by Gengiz Khan's troops were known as massacres.

Nevertheless, Mongol absolutely succeeds in a very nice picture of the hard and unpredictable life on the steppe, hunted by everyone and the question of how to survive in the sometimes barren grasslands. Beautifully played with breathtaking vistas and landscapes and the soundtrack by the Finnish composer Tuomas Kantelinen is enchanting and menacing at the same time. Beautiful, very beautiful.
