A reasonable film that relies on the visual.

A decent story, albeit very slow to start. Only after an hour there is some action and the speed is good. Perhaps the story has to be a little too much conspiracy.

The sometimes very theatrical acting partly worked. Sometimes I really liked certain looks, especially from Li Gong; sometimes, though, I got the giggles (when that daughter and Yun Fat's first wife run away to end up getting killed. There really wasn't any need for that screeching.).

Visually, this film was very good. Sometimes even too many colors for my taste. It was a bit busy, it was all bombastic. Of course, this is also part of the charm of this film.
The fighting was fine, although the weapons were clearly not real.

A 3, because entertaining, but not to be seen again in the short term.

The sets, the clothing, the extras: it is all gigantic and it all looks fantastically colorful. I can't remember seeing such impressive splendor in a movie before.

It kind of looks like Yimou Zhang was practicing for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. And it seems that amid that gigantism, Zhang paid less attention to the most interesting entanglements with all kinds of intrigue at the imperial court. In any case, the story comes out much less than in Zhang's previous films. But visually it is all overwhelming.

And it was again a pleasure to see Gong Li, although in this film she faced fierce competition from the beautiful Man Li. In view of the beautiful clothing of the Empress and the court, this film could also have been called Curse of the Bulging Breasts.

Sublime and visual gem that is an experience to watch, especially on Blu-ray, and also has the necessary other things to offer.

In this sense, beautiful image is created around the customs and traditions of the time. What a fuss really, but very interesting to watch. Just like the almost hysterical decoration and colors of the palace itself in this whole. What a special splendor and splendor. It slowly emerges that things are not going well between the family in the middle of this paradise. However, the reason is not entirely clear yet...

The dissatisfaction and imbalance are subtly presented, as well as the way of revenge that can be called downright mean. Add to that the case of two lovers, who are more or less brother and sister, and the living corpse, proverbially, called stepmother rolls out of the closet and the drama is complete. A drama that turns into a coup from halfway through with spectacular fight scenes towards the end.

Entertaining, spectacular, pleasing to the eye are descriptions that come to mind. Still, I have a little trouble with all the pomp and circumstance, the drama and the futuristic-looking fight scenes. Something that doesn't quite fit in the mix in my opinion. But maybe I'll think differently about that a second time.
