Interesting story to follow in whichthe insanityof the main character is central. Well constructed and a very strong performance by Hopkins. The doll looks nice and creepy and the interactions/conversations between Hopkins and the doll are captivating. A few strong scenes such as the 5 minutes of silence where the doll is not allowed to say anything, the wooden heart on the door and the moments when Hopkins completely loses his mind.
7/10

Another strong role by Hopkins, as a magician and ventriloquist with a split personality that he projects onto his puppet Fats. Especially the second half has a number of exciting scenes, for example on the boat on the lake and when the puppet gradually takes over control from its manipulator. Hopkins proves here that his talent is almost unmatched when it comes to conveying a certain state of mind. Incidentally, he learned ventriloquism for the film himself and when the puppet speaks, it is effectively Hopkins who speaks. Just try that: having a dialogue with yourself.

In between epic film projects, director Richard Attenborough made room for a smaller-scale drama thriller with a number of horror moments. This Magic benefits from a young Anthony Hopkins, who almost single-handedly carries the film and single-handedly provides scenes in which the pressure is effectively increased. The other roles do not do badly, but hardly succeed in providing their characters with really interesting traits. The disadvantage is that the appeal of the ventriloquist's dummy quickly wears off, which means that his vulgar jokes and intrusive presence quickly cause unintended irritation. As a result, Magic struggles to build up a consistent arc of tension, but ultimately comes across as interesting enough. The somewhat dry visual aspect prevents a narrow pass.
