Lucy Gallant (Jane Wyman), a sophisticated and intelligent young lady from the east, comes to a small town in the Texas oil fields. After calling off her wedding, she sells her wardrobe to the wives and daughters of the newly rich oil seekers in order to support herself. After 20 years, her small shop has grown into the largest department store in Texas. Meanwhile, Casey Cole (Charlton Heston), her former love, is still waiting for her, in the hope that she will eventually understand that love and a career can go hand in hand.
