Lincoln plot

The film follows the political clash between Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States, and the powerful men of his cabinet in the fight against the abolition of slavery and the end of the American Civil War. The focus is mainly on the final months of Lincoln's life, including a focus on the permanent abolition of slavery, which resulted from a very narrow vote in the House of Representatives on the 13th Amendment.

“Each of us has made it possible for the other to do terrible things.”

I always enjoy these kinds of historical films. Abraham Lincoln is, of course, an iconic character, and it's been a great decision to really focus on a particular period in the life of the 16th President of the United States. Ending slavery, and ending the civil war at the same time. Just before his death on April 15, 1865.

There's a lot of political scheming and talk, but it's still interesting and that's to the credit of Spielberg and of course the incomparable Day-Lewis. Before I knew it, an hour had passed, and the actors and the razor-sharp script slowly suck you into the film. Fantastic acting also from Jones, Strathairn, Field, Costabile and all those other famous actors. Lincoln is a film that shows what can happen when there is quality and craftsmanship both in front of and behind the camera.

Central to this are the deliberations that preceded the abolition of slavery to prevent the southern confederal states from throwing a spanner in the works after the American Civil War. Interesting tactical political joust, in which emotions regularly run high.

Well acted, especially by Daniel Day-Lewis, who with his phenomenal title role won just about every conceivable accolade, including his third Oscar. Steven Spielberg knows better than anyone how to bring a story to the fore.

Brilliant movie. Great acting in a movie where an awful lot is going on at the same time and nothing is black and white. I don't understand the criticism that the film is too slow. There's so much going on during the two-and-a-half hours that the film runs that I really don't know how it could have been shorter in a way that does justice to the complexity of the various parts. Lincoln's marriage/family life, his pragmatism toward Stevens, his idealism toward his cabinet, his emergency-breaking-law-tyranny and emergency-breaking-law corruption, the political force fields, you name it. Everything is put down powerfully without over-acting. The rhetoric in the house is great (great Tommy Lee Jones) and so are Lincoln's stories. Rarely good film that deserves all the praise.
