Les Chatouilles plot

Odette is eight years old. She smiles and likes to draw. She trusts the adults. Why would she distrust a friend of her parents? Why would she refuse to play tickle games? What a special movie. I find the way the story is told very creative and it was easy to look away. It felt accessible to me. I find the style and narrative form a plus on the one hand, and on the other hand it doesn't really appeal to me. Sometimes it went a little too fast for me, then I couldn't follow it, and I sometimes find the humor quite bland. Sexual abuse is a heavy subject, but I think this film is not too bad, in terms of gravity. The film fits the current situation, in which you hear a lot about sexual abuse. It's awful that it happens and it shouldn't, but talking about it can help. I think a film like this can contribute to that, and I think that's positive. It also makes clear how much influence abuse can have on someone. I think the acting is good, I don't think the dance is great, but it is a nice and beautiful part of the film, and Odette's character appeals to me. I think Andréa Bescond and Cyrille Mairesse play her nicely. At first I thought of 3 stars, but on closer inspection I think it's worth more than that. I appreciate the originality and choice of subject. A 7. 3.5*

A few days after the crushing "Tell Me Who I Am", this "Les Chatouilles" which denounces the criminality of pedophilia in a completely different way, but certainly also very penetrating.
Odette is an energetic, ambitious but irritable young woman who tries to shake off the traumas of the past in her dance but does not succeed enough and realizes that, as another victim declares in court, "everything belongs to her diminished, her self-confidence, her individuality, her life..."
Two phases in the film will stick with me the most. First, the attitude of the mother, a reaction of disbelief and obfuscation which is unfortunately quite common, but coming from a mother, all the worse and incomprehensible. Karin Viard, who can easily impose an expression of indifference and detachment on her being, is in need of a good interpretation.
And second, how cowardly it is to lure an innocent and unsuspecting child into such abuse. In that respect, the scenes with the girl, beautifully performed by Cyrille Mairesse and Pierre Deladonchamps, are discreet but very suggestive.
In the end, the film brings some figures that underline the problem of child abuse.

Sometimes there are those hidden gems that you are glad to have discovered. This is one of those. Excellent production with great narrative power, partly thanks to the autobiographical element. The slightly absurd and at times comic note feels a bit uncomfortable at first given the seriousness of the subject, but in the end it contributes to the layering of the story. Other than that you just have to see it. It's a film that either immediately appeals to you or not.
