Le Temps Qui Reste plot

31-year-old Romain (Melvin Poupaud) is a selfish and arrogant fashion photographer who seems to have it all: a successful career, a nice apartment in Paris and a nice boyfriend. When he faints during a photo shoot and is examined in the hospital, it turns out he has a tumor. His chances of survival are minimal and he refuses to be treated. Romain doesn't tell anyone about his illness. After an argument with his family and the breakup of his relationship, he travels to his grandmother (Jeanne Moreau). She is the only person he confides in his secret 'because you are as close to death as I am'. On his return trip to Paris, a waitress (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi) in a roadhouse gives him an unexpected offer that will change his life.

Didn't think it was really special. Sometimes I get the impression that a film about a terminally ill should receive direct credit from the viewer. It is of course very bad. But that doesn't mean it's also very good right away. Found it rather average. Cinematography, acting, music etc. were all quite nice. In a film with such a heavy subject, I find the elaboration of the story and especially the characters more important. What I just mentioned the film at most supports and does not excel to become more important than it is.

I didn't like the story/character development at all. The starting point (has everything, looks good, successful, rather arrogant) is actually very cliché. The development he goes through is then rather dull. He's a bit emotional (although he saves the audience from too much drama), he handles it in his own way and you get to know him a little better for what he really is. But again it's not really special. The bee characters don't matter too much, the flashbacks are pretty meaningless actually and although there are some nice scenes, I didn't find anything that impressed me.

So it didn't bother me all that much. That is a problem with a film with such a premise. I did get the 'what if I' feeling a bit, since the main character is the same age as me. Still, I found the chosen misery a bit arbitrary. When you enter a hospital you will find dozens of these kinds of stories. Perhaps the earthly thing is the great asset, but it was not enough for me. Have the idea that Ozon has quite a talent, but here it hardly really comes out. That was more the case at the Swimming Pool. 2.5 stars.

Pretty very nice. Especially very good game Poupaud who puts down a bastard, but where you immediately see that there is a lot of humanity behind it and this is more a self-chosen way to be a nasty and annoying person, than that he really is. Also a nice little movie to catch a little later in the evening (partly due to the short length). Maybe filmed a bit too solid and boring, but the music is beautiful. And despite the heavy subject, it all left me a bit cold. Enough. 3.0*.

A decent film, but recorded too fleeting and too sterile to really wring emotion out of me. Actually I have - besides the more than nice acting - little positive to report about this film. It just looked away very quickly, that's all, for the rest it left me pretty cold actually. The ending was still nice, but that's it; no outliers.

Just reasonable, nothing more. Based on this film, I don't exactly feel the urgent urge to go through the rest of Ozon's oeuvre, but oh well. Can only lose a 2.5* on this.
