La Veuve de Saint-Pierre plot
Off the coast of Newfoundland is the French island of St. Pierre. Here in 1850 Neel Auguste (Emir Kusturica) is sentenced to death. But there is no guillotine and no executioner on the island. The governor decides to bring the guillotine over from France. While awaiting execution, which will take some time, the condemned man is housed with the captain of the garrison (Daniel Auteuil). His wife, Madame La (Juliette Binoche), cares about Neel's fate and takes pity on him.
