La Strada plot

"Filmed in Italy - where it happened!"

Gelsomina is sold by her poor mother to the rough shackles king Zampanò. While performing his tour de force at fairs and carnivals, Gelsomina has to beat the drum, play in comical skits and pass the hat. Zampanò treats the girl with whom he lives under the hood of his motorcycle cargo bike badly. She threatens to sink into apathy, until she meets the cheerful tightrope walker 'de Gek'.

This movie really blew me away. Everything is beautiful about this movie. The style is sort of Charlie Chaplin meets Tom Waits and is very raw – everything and everyone has a very shabby appearance – but also endearing. The two or actually three main characters are all three fascinating characters to follow and their mutual relationships – full of attraction and repulsion – are also fascinating. The cynical Zampano and the dreamy Gelsomina are opposite in character but both extremely tragic figures and seem condemned to each other because nobody else loves them. De Gek is also a tragic figure who already announces his early death. In particular, the sad little clown Gelsomina with her 'artichoke head' steals the show (even though Quinn may be the best acting).

Fellini compared public life to a circus. People put on a mask, don't show their true emotions and want applause for their tricks and their powerhouse. The three main characters resemble figures from the commedia dell'arte. Zampanò is Pantalone, the badass bear in charge. Gelsomina is Columbina, the fragile female he considers his property. For decency, he introduces her as his wife, although they are not married. Il Matto is Harlequin, the clown who sows uproar with his interventions and steals Gelsomina's sympathy. She is childish, naive and fickle. One moment she's laughing, then suddenly she's crying, as if there's nothing in between. Zampanò hides his emotions behind his tough, cheeky demeanor, until at the end he can't hold back his tears.

The shooting took place in the heart of Italy, in Lazio and the Abruzzi. The poverty of the people is shown, with street children and with Gelsomina's family who sell her as a kind of serf. Catholicism offers comfort and hope with processions and monastic life. The artists have a wandering existence. Where they put their hats down, they are at home.

Nino Rota's music uses swirling rhythms that fit a circus ring or a barrel organ. Then comes a sentimental theme that the characters pass on to each other. First Il Matto plays it on his pocket violin, then Gelsomina on her trumpet. Shortly before the end , the melody awakens the memory of her in Zampanò. It is a moving portrayal of the sadness people encounter on their life path.

Not that I'm an extreme fan of La strada or Fellini, but the fourth film I saw by him convinces me somewhat. What it always does well - magnified or not - are contradictions. We find this in the figures of Zampano, a gruff brute, and his helper Gelsomina, a melancholy naive child who is 'sold' by her mother to save the family from starvation. The framework of poor Italy was immediately highlighted and Zampano also tries to brighten up his poor life by crossing the country as a traveling artist.

Very strong was the interplay between the two main characters, who are both polarized into caricatural figures of purity and depravity. Gelsomina is bound to him by her fate, and however long the road may be, she hopes for a speedy recovery, often against her better judgement. She doesn't get to know him when he can be friendly on the one hand (at the nuns), but on the other hand also cruel.

The third protagonist, the Crazy, is a kind of mirror or wedge between Gelsomina and Zampano and indirectly leads the duo to a final decision. La strada is a smooth film, worthy of recommendation and with a strong cast with the necessary symbolism. Very high 3.5*, close to 4.0*.
