That atmosphere. Delicious. Story-wise, little happens in this 'La Piscine', but the subcutaneous tension keeps you on the edge of your seat until the final climax. Particularly beautifully done.

Excellent cast. Delon is perfect and Schneider and Birkin also do their part. The sweat almost drips from the screen, director Deray transfers the heat well. Hang out and enjoy.

'La Piscine' is typically such a film that makes you long for the heat and a cool swimming pool. A little smoking and drinking and the party is complete. Very good movie. Beautiful setting, atmosphere and fantastic tensions.

It starts off crazy, with wildlife images turned upside down during the credits. You are immediately sucked in by the Provencal atmosphere. Sunlight and water have been used effectively, for example when a curtain is torn open to let in the light. It was the time of hippies, miniskirts and economic boom. Jean-Paul is a spoiled rich man who is surrounded by beautiful women, fast cars and a large swimming pool. Sunbathing suits him better than working. Lazy jazz music with vibraphone enhances this sense of dolce far niente.

There is a rivalry between the two men. They are two playboys, they show cockerel behaviour. There is also rivalry between the two women. Marianne fears that her place may be taken by a younger woman like Penélope. This one must have grown up in England, which makes Jane Birkin's accent plausible.

In the opening scene, Alain Delon laughs and throws Romy Schneider into the pool. This foreshadows the murder, the great turnaround. After this, the tone becomes much darker. The attempt to cover up the murder is clumsy. It is therefore not a thriller about the near-perfect murder, but a realistic story about what such an act brings about between two people. Marianne suddenly has the power to decide his fate: whether or not to provide evidence to the police, whether or not to stay with him. What starts with a carefree holiday mood, turns into a shadowy game of mistrust.

Still a (French) mini-classic. I've been put aside many times for unknown reasons. A film that largely takes place on and next to the same location, namely the swimming pool. Lazing around, relaxing, making love, enjoying each other, the sun, the beautiful life and the refreshing dip in the pool. That should not be more ... This atmosphere runs like a red thread through the film.

Although little actually happens until the climax, the film is still entertaining. It never really gets boring, nor does it get long-winded. That's the chemistry between the graceful Romy Schneider and playboy Alain Delon. And even when Maurice Ronet appears on the scene, it only gets better because the tensions then bubble up. As so often you experience that the outer friendship is merely gilded and wait for the festering bump to burst open.

What I didn't really understand is why Jean-Paul took off Harry's clothes when he was drowned. Why was this necessary? The holiday mood already got an irreversibly rancid effect with this event. Nice!
