La Double Vie de Véronique plot

"Each of us is matched somewhere in the world, by our exact double - someone who shares our thoughts and dreams."

The Polish Weronika and the French Véronique were born on the same day twenty years ago and, without their knowledge of each other's existence, identical. They suffer from the same heart condition, are both musical and have a beautiful voice. They are left handed, like to walk barefoot and tend to massage their eyelids with their gold ring. And while they can't explain it rationally, they both have a strong, mysterious sense of not being alone. Without understanding, Weronika and Véronique are actually looking for each other and Weronika's life is in the service of Véronique's.

This is a great example of magical realism. The characters and their environment seem realistic, but a magical element creeps in in the form of that doppelgänger and vague telepathic contacts. A dreamy atmosphere is created with the help of the green light and the music, even leaning towards New Age. Irène Jacob does not sing herself, but does play a beautiful role full of wonder and mystery. Mirrors symbolize the dual personality. Another motive is the rising of the soul from the body. After the death of the Polish, we see the point of view of her outgoing soul. In puppetry, an angel rises after the death of a doll. Then there is another car wreck that is lifted into the air.

The idea of a dual personality with two nationalities comes from the life of Kieslowski himself. He has partly left his Polish identity to start a new life in France.

La Double Vie de Véronique by Krzysztof Kieslowski is a film in which the beautiful images and sublime music of Preisner completely suck you into a melancholic dream. In concrete terms, there is not much logical story, but as a viewer you accept that blindly because the film uses the logic of a dream.

The images have a unique atmosphere, which is partly due to the separate color filters and a kind of melancholic desolation of the locations.

The ending came quite abruptly, but that shouldn't spoil the fun either. A film that makes you forget the time and takes you for a moment into a dreamy world.

Decent setback. Beautiful music, beautifully filmed and occasionally great shots and ideas, but as a whole very cold. The movie just didn't grab my attention. Partly because I had no idea what exactly I was looking at, partly because characters just wouldn't come to life. Then this is a beautiful painting, but an empty film and even an hour and a half is too much. 2.5*.
