All the negative preconceptions about arthouse films are confirmed in this pretentious, talkative drama set in a Times Square restaurant. The central character is Pedro [Raúl Briones], an immigrant who works as a chef in the hope that his boss [Oded Fehr] will help him obtain a residence permit. While at work, he is visited by Estela [Anna Diaz], the daughter of a friend of Pedro's mother, who asks him for a job and is hired as his assistant. Pedro's is having an affair with waitress Julia [Rooney Mara], who is pregnant with his child, and the kitchen is in turmoil after the disappearance of $830. The kitchen is a melting pot of cultures and a lot is happening, but there is no story. There are slow, philosophical monologues about social issues and a well-directed unbroken shot to the credit of Ruizpalacios and cinematographer Juan Pablo Ramírez. It's like watching two players keep a ball up in their own half for 5 minutes during a football match. Nicely done, but it makes no sense. Filmed in pretentious black and white.

I wholeheartedly agree with the upstairs neighbor; truly a terrible film in every way, full of unsympathetic characters who, cursing and helplessly daydreaming, have to find their way through life and the kitchen. They are all so abject that the average viewer would wish this dinner to be over quickly, but no: Ruizpalacios has set aside two and a half (!) hours for this indeed hyperpretentious copious meal, in which camera work and editing contain so many tricks that we almost have to deal with [i]a (failed) graduation project here. To be avoided.

Theatrical, but it is not for nothing a film adaptation of a play. The kitchen in the popular restaurant "The Grill" is largely run by immigrants without residence status, and thus in a vulnerable position. Good observations about the dark side of capitalism. The film is a bit too long and is at times deadly tiring.
