Jigokumon plot

"The most honored screen import in a decade!"

During the feudal 12th century in Japan, the samurai Moritoh will be rewarded for the courage to protect his ruler. He chooses the beautiful, aristocratic Kesa, who unfortunately is already married to another samurai. Moritoh tries in many ways to get rid of her husband, but like himself, her loyalty is unconditional.

Small Japanese classic, which won the Golden Palm in Cannes in the 1950s and was perhaps one of the first Japanese films in color. The story builds very slowly to a dramatic climax. The colors and decors come into their own, but the almost biblical story about obsessively loving someone else's wife no longer surprises. Not bad to watch but not earth-shattering.

The colours are sometimes quite beautiful, nice and bright and clear and for me personally quite surprising, because I didn't know that Jigokumon was a colour film and didn't expect that either.

The story itself took me a while to get going. The pace is not too high and it takes a while before you know all the characters. The developments after that make it slowly more interesting and every now and then there is some sparse action, but in the end I was not really captivated by it.

In the end it's all quite nice, but in my opinion not really all that special, even though this film did win a number of awards at the time.

A simple plot that still managed to captivate me, because despite the sometimes somewhat theatrical acting, Morita's obsession came across well. But of course it's all about the play of colours, and that was truly exceptionally beautiful, with Machiko Kyo's orange robe as the highlight. The Masters of Cinema Blu-ray of Eureka is a feast for the eyes, but unfortunately contains no extras other than a reasonably informative booklet with essays by Philip Kemp and Carl Theodor Dreyer.
