Jesus Revolution plot

"When you open your heart...there's room for everyone."

The 1970s. Young Greg Laurie is raised by his struggling mother, Charlene. Laurie and a sea of young people descend on sunny Southern California to redefine truth by all means of liberation. Inadvertently, he meets Lonnie Frisbee, a charismatic hippie street preacher, and Reverend Chuck Smith, who have opened the doors of Smith's languishing church to a torrent of errant youth and an unexpected revival of radical, newfound love.

I was a bit hesitant beforehand, because I'm not into religious films. Fortunately, the filmmakers have chosen to limit the preachy moments and focus mainly on the development of a hippie movement into a religious movement. As a result, the film is doable. Colorful as befits hippies and a bit nostalgic.

Greg Laurie co-wrote the screenplay for this genesis of what the postscript called "the greatest spiritual development in U.S. history." Greg [Joel Courtney] is a youngster himself looking for connection in 1968. He finds it in the Cavalry Church when pastor Chuck Smith decides against the wishes of some influential members of his congregation to literally open the doors to hippies. With the help of the enigmatic Lonnie Frisbee [Jonathan Roumie] and a band playing 'Jesus Music', Chuck is a source of inspiration for Greg, who takes an increasingly active role, partly due to his love for Chuck's daughter Cathe [Anna Grace Barlow]. Persiflage and sentiment are constantly lurking, but thanks to the excellent acting, this is never caricatured or preachy. Grammer in particular makes a big impression.

Hippies meet Jesus…

True story that gives you a good picture of the hippie movement that turns away from drugs and dedicates itself to the faith in Jesus and finds their strength in that. Faith is their 'drug'.

Faith and Jesus are the main subject here, but I see it more as a beautifully shot film about hippies. Very atmospherically shot. When I think of a religious film (as this is described) I have to think of propaganda for Christianity, but this film is certainly not that, given that it is about something from the late 60s early 70s. I have to admit that it intrigues me and I do believe in what I have seen, but I see it more as a film adaptation of something that really happened and not as a film to convert people.

On the other hand, if I had lived as a young adult at that time, I might have lived as a hippie, because their freedom of thought is something that is almost unthinkable in our 'norm society' today. That is why I really liked this film because it gives you an idea of what hippies stood for and how they thought.

The film moves along at a leisurely pace and the two hours pass by quickly.

Kelsey Grammar, who I knew from Cheers (others from Frasier, but I have never seen), carries this film very credibly.

I don't know Anna Grace Barlow but she is a feast for the eyes and a very amiable actress of whom we will certainly hear more. Also plays a top role in this.

Jonathan Roumie and Joel Courtney also don't do badly, but they are rather overshadowed by Kelsey and Anna.

If you like true stories without too much sensationalism, this is a must. If you are looking for Hollywood drama, you will not find it here.

I enjoyed it and learned something new about a part of our history. At the end credits, as is usually the case with these films, some background information and photos of the real characters this film revolves around… 4*
