He can win an election, but can he rule a country? Says Die Kroniek. Nice, that language. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the film. So sometimes you even get the idea that Eastwood forgets to make one. Certainly the first half consists solely of coughing up contradictions against Mandela's wisdom. Even his daughter can't escape it. Nothing but praise for the man, but as a film such an angle only works sparsely.

There is hardly any movement, characters mainly remain flat and obliging and insofar as there is any progress, it is mainly in the passage of time. Once the tournament is about to start and Mandela is pushed more in the direction of the spectator, that wafer-thin set-up naturally starts to take its revenge. The thin line around the bodyguards is just barely going, but strangely enough, there is no Springbok who represents anything at that moment.

Not much more is known about Chester than that he is black and Matt Damon is completely screwed as captain. Very boring role and just like the others, fully in the service of. It all gets way too gooey and tacky with a song called Colorblind, someone getting a ticket to the game, and visions in prison. With lavish slow motions and such a trite remark from Pienaar, the finale also becomes almost unbearable. Unfortunately.

Typical Eastwood movie.

Also a typical Hollywood movie of course. Making a film about a cultural highlight of another country, with two Hollywood actors in the main roles. And that with the necessary sense of sentiment and kitsch. Don't think I'll ever be a fan.

As always it is a professionally made film, Eastwood also owes his job to that. But beyond that there is nothing at all. Very boring, very predictable, very dull and stale. A film that just manages to entertain while watching, but only seems to get more annoying after that.

Visually nothing exciting, the music is thick and sentimental, as is the settlement of the final finale. It is a film that fits perfectly within Eastwood's oeuvre, but unfortunately as a film itself represents little or nothing. Freeman and Damon are doing well, the rest of the film is a lot less.

2.0*

A big congratulations to Clint Eastwood for the beautiful images, alive of course from the sports competitions.

In addition, the historical event is still well told with many clever dialogues and sayings.

Morgan Freeman is perfect as Nelson Mandela and also Matt Damon as the leader of the rugby team.

nice movie
