It's starting to bother me that historical drama in the Netherlands should continue to feel so devilishly stale. As if the costs for decoration and expensive sets prevent it from coming up with a surprising and unconventional script. This may also explain why, in these kinds of ambitious projects, the choice is often made for book adaptations of popular novels.

How Expensive Was the Sugar is by no means a bad film, but it has that politically correct tone everywhere that you might have gotten away with in the nineties but that is no longer of this time. We have all grown up with the idea that slavery is a disgusting thing and that we should reject it to the very core (rightly so!). But what does a film like this add to that well-known image?

Attempts are still being made to incorporate something of an unusual perspective by humanizing the plantation owners. Still, it doesn't manage to get real shades of gray anywhere. It remains to be seen how disgusting the system actually was. What also doesn't help is that the story seems to jump from one piece to the next, even in the mini-series where there is time to work it out in more detail. This makes it a fragmentary mess that offers little room for psychological depth.

Watched this movie and thought it was a great movie. Despite the fact that the main character is not that sympathetic, it still manages to captivate from start to finish. The cast did a great job and the movie looked good.

A fine Dutch film, thought it was worth watching.

How Expensive Was the Sugar

Reasonable historical film. The biggest downside of Hoe Duur Was de Suiker is that it is all so conventional and predictable, and then there is also the sometimes very mediocre acting and the terrible dialogues. The Dutch film problem so to speak, although visually and in terms of story it is all well put together. How Expensive Was the Sugar is not annoying to watch either, but I expected a little more from it.
