Well I didn't think this was much I must say and I expected a bit more from it. A King fan in itself, but the rule that the films based on his books often fail, prove once again.

Fairly standard story, about the childhood of some children a la It, The body and Dreamcatcher to name a few. But other than the fact that young Bobby gains a father figure and friend and goes through a bit of a coming-of-age growth, standing up for himself and eventually growing up to his mother, that's about it. Little compelling, little exciting, a slight touch of something paranormal but far too little is done with it. It's a bit neither meat nor fish. TV movie at its best.

Just like The Green Mile based on a Stephen King book, and also the movie that made me think of the most, because here too there's a frame story of someone playing a character with psychic powers where we get to see very little of who that person really is and where his gift comes from. In combination with an atmosphere that felt very similar to that of The Green Mile, the comparison is inevitable for me.

Another similarity is somewhat more arbitrary, namely that this film also has a director who pays little attention to the visual aspect: it is mainly recorded. Anyway, I sometimes have the feeling that those kinds of directors are the rule rather than the exception. More important are the differences. First of all, this film is a lot less melodramatic, and also a lot shorter, which are two plus points in my opinion.

The fact that the film is nevertheless not much better than The Green Mile is because there are still some further comments to be made. While the kids' acting is decent, I'm having issues with the script. For example, they sometimes (especially the main character) get statements that I don't think are age appropriate like when the main character is asked by his mother if he can forgive her, he replies that he is working on it. Furthermore, the "tendencies" of the bully don't sit well with me. Nothing wrong with those tendencies, while the film seems to condemn it and give it as a reason for bullying. That gives me a bit of a bad aftertaste. And finally, they could have gone a bit more with the tension with the antagonists.

Ultimately slightly better than The Green Mile, therefore half a bit more than that film. 1.5*.
