Hampstead plot

Hampstead Village, London. American widow Emily Waters finds it difficult to focus on the things that need attention, her beautiful apartment, her finances and her son. Despite the help of her good friend Fiona, she doesn't want to give in to the fact that she wanders through life without thinking about her future. One day, from her window, she sees a dilapidated barn that appears to be inhabited by an untidy man. She witnesses an attack on him by a group of professional thugs. Shocked, she calls the police and waits for help. The next day she decides to investigate the woods herself.

Diane Keaton and Brendan Gleeson make the best of it in this somewhat simplistic, hardly surprising romantic comedy. Keaton is an American widow, bitter because her husband cheated on her and left her with a mountain of debt that threatens to lose her home. Gleeson is a man who has lived for many years in a hut on the grounds of a dilapidated former hospital.

The film wants us to believe that Gleeson has been living there unnoticed by the neighbourhood all this time, the script tries too hard to portray Keaton as a saint (oh, she also volunteers in an Oxfam shop) and her wealthy 'friends' are more caricatures than real people. The script bends over backwards to remain interesting, but in doing so confirms its own mediocrity. But Keaton and Gleeson make a nice 'odd couple' and the beautiful location does contribute to the romantic tone that this romcom tries to set.

Almost soporific. The ever-so-nervous Keaton and rough-hewn Gleeson as a romantic duo are already improbable, that the script prescribes that the two actually fall head over heels for each other immediately after their first meeting is, if possible, an even bigger blunder. To spice things up a bit, a real lawsuit is added at the end, so fans of scenes on court may still get their money's worth. It must also be said that there is little wrong with the acting of the enthusiastic Keaton, but she is let down by the aimless storyline, fatally that there is really no room for any depth in the characterization. Neat, well-behaved but unremarkable film, seems to me actually only suitable for a fairly elderly target group who want something different than another evening of line dancing.

Weak British romcom that fishes in the same pond as a film like Notting Hill, but lacks the charm and nice characters of that. The script is rather forced and the characters just don't want to convince. Diane Keaton and Brendan Gleeson are both a bit lost. It's all just worth watching and the film is not really annoying, but little of it will stick.
