When a social drama is made in Europe, I usually watch it with great pleasure, but this film was a real disappointment. An excruciatingly slow, often unclearly told story that never becomes gripping. The strange, wrongly chosen camera work with non-functional jerky, close-up scenes, also does not help you to identify with the characters. The unsatisfactory ending, where you have the feeling that the story is far from being told, completes the disillusionment.

A plus point is the acting of Collette in particular, who goes completely wild here, but unfortunately this strong role of this underrated actress will not get the spotlight. What happens around her is too insignificant for that.

Depressing, soberly shot Irish drama, especially worth watching because of the desolate atmosphere and the strong roles of Jack Reynor and Toni Collette. The plot is not very substantial but feels real and lived through, which makes the events make the necessary impression. Afterwards you are glad that your own life is at least not as shitty as that of the main characters.

Since the death of her husband, Jean [Toni Collette] has fallen into a deep depression. Her son John [Jack Reynor], a taxi driver who can barely pay his own bills, is tired of solving the problems Jean causes. He comes into contact with Jim [Michael Smiley] who can help Jean take the first steps in the battle against her addiction, but John needs money quickly to continue this fight. And that puts him in a moral dilemma. Dark, penetrating social drama with beautiful teamwork by Collette and Reynor and a nice supporting role for Will Poulter as John's best friend Shane who also has to find a way out of an impasse.
