Mme.

Overloaded with prices, but in the end it really doesn't impress me much. Funny to see how the beach scene quickly fell out of place here because it would be too erotic. And then you have to see how we look at it now.

I mainly watched this film because of its status, but unfortunately it disappointed me in that area. I had hoped that the impact of Pearl Harbor would be really good, but we mainly get a rather dull and weak romantic story here.

The romance is very dull and has little impact. The only small highlight is the scene on the beach, but then those are just about all the beautiful romantic moments. The rest is pretty boring.

Yet the film is not terribly boring in the first part, because of the beautiful location. Despite the black and white it is still a very nice picture. Nicely exotic and clearly a beautiful paradise. That's a well-chosen location.

The film does have a fairly spectacular final phase, but everything that comes before that is very weak. I can almost compare it to Michael Bay's version. Just such bland and endlessly stretched romance, a spectacular attack, and just so little impact.

Extra points for the final phase, locations and Clift's catchy acting.

Been a while since I saw the movie. A film with an impressive cast & crew. Director Fred Zimmerman had scored with High Noon a year earlier. The story is based on a book written by James Jones from his own experiences of WWII, which resulted in not only this story, but also The Thin Red Line. And the cast is in shape too. No less than 5 actors were nominated for an Oscar, of which Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed were allowed to take the statuette home. It is striking that Montgomery Clift did not win, although William Holden in Stalag 17 is not bad either. But Clift is quite impressive, even more so than Burt Lancaster.

Montgomery Clift is practically the pioneer of method acting, especially in this movie. He taught himself to box and play the trumpet. Together with Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire, a new generation of actors emerged with their own style.

It has mainly become a story, characteristic of the zeitgeist of course. But quite well done with actors who were in quite good shape. Very exciting to watch. Also because it gradually derails and the film leaves the romantic path a bit. We are therefore in the period just before Pearl Harbor. Many soldiers there were mainly on standby and previously engaged in other activities. Until they themselves were awakened by the attack on Pearl Harbor and thrown into the war.

The film has certainly stood the test of time. Only the romance between Burt Lancaster's and Deborah Kerr's characters isn't always that interesting and doesn't compare to the relationship between Montgomery Clift's and Donna Reed's characters. And Frank Sinatra is less known as an actor, but he certainly earned his Oscar here!

“Nobody ever lies about being lonely.”

Strong classic. I actually expected that From Here to Eternity would also focus on the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, but the film is mainly a romantic drama with some serious undertones such as PTSD, alcohol addiction and the stifling macho culture within the army. Lancaster, Clift, Kerr, Sinatra (in an atypical comeback role) and Donna Reed are all doing very well, and the film sometimes also has quite a sensual and sexual charge (for the time). The attack of the Japanese is over in no time, but because of the focus on the characters, and how they handle the attack, it didn't bother for a moment.
