En Kärlekshistoria plot

At the end of the week, the work is done at a small garage, the workers receive their pay packet. It is high summer, life can be enjoyed. The two protagonists meet in an equally idyllic setting, a beautiful park. But it is the garden of a hospital, where Per and Annika meet. Both are visiting the sick, respectively with a grandfather and an aunt. Here these old sick people seem to be the first visible signs of the stuck, desperate, disappointed and lonely adult world. Meanwhile, the young lovers cautiously approach each other. Their love does not yet care about social prestige and class boundaries, but creates a universe of its own. An endearing, almost naive universe, but it is the only hope in this world, because little can be expected from the adults.

Nice. And fun. An ode to your first love. Roy Andersson seems to think back wistfully to a period in life, of which he seems to say; this is pure. Later on you become lonely. Like the grandpa at the beginning. Or you end up in a broken relationship. Like the girl's parents. Or become an old spinster like her sister. He brings the love story in a light-hearted way. Pretty playful. Also in the visual language. The shortcomings of the young actors, such as lack of experience, only benefit the film. The uncertain, almost timid play suits the characters and the phase of their lives. At times it is heartbreaking. It often remains superficial. But isn't that usually the case in reality? In the meantime, the humor seeps through more and more. It's quite hilarious, especially at the end. And although I actually got the last joke right away, I didn't like it any less. This is a love story like there are 1000's. The fact that En Kärlekshistoria still feels fresh, original and different is extra clever. For the sake of convenience, I'll give those credits to Andersson. 4 stars.

Very nice video until about half an hour before the end. The summery atmosphere is excellently displayed and what I often like about these types of films is that there is hardly any plot, but mainly atmospheric images. That also means that some scenes are sometimes less fascinating and drag on, but the whole is always convincing. Beautiful images, fine soundtrack and two excellent young actors who talk little but still say a lot. That was quite a few movies back that I watched with such a nice feeling. Anyway, then suddenly that ending comes to that party and it all becomes so absurd (or absurd?) suddenly. Whatever it may be, I really couldn't do anything with it and it detracts from the film. Therefore only 3.5*.

The film very aptly shows the infatuation of two adolescents – still children, actually – but is therefore not very special, because that is always and everywhere when young people discover love: the fascination and hypersensitivity for each other, the uncertainty and nervousness about how to happens to the other, the pure happiness when you are together. The world of the elderly around it is only a nuisance within the idyll, also for the viewer. But towards the end, that background of the elderly, who are full of pain and frustration because they are lonely or have money problems, suddenly becomes the foreground and the film turns out to be about the contrast between the pure world of the lovers who are open for each other and the future and the depraved world of the elderly who are disappointed in life and full of resentment. The (failed) party with which the film ends suddenly shows the Roy Anderson we know from films like Sånger från Andra Våningen (Film, 2000) : absurd scenes in which the impotent anger of disillusioned people has both a tragic and comic effect. But unlike in Romeo and Juliet where the lovers tragically fall victim to a family feud, i.e. the adult world, the tumult of the family feud passes our love couple by because they have literally and figuratively withdrawn into their own world .

Like Andersson's more recent films, the film lacks drama, but it does show human existence in which this first film by Andersson briefly shows Adam and Eve's paradise before they fall out.
