It's 1937 and Ramon Mercador is a young officer fighting Franco's forces in the Spanish Civil War. His mother, Caridad del Rio, is an undercover agent for the GPU (Soviet Secret Service). She recruits Ramon as one of the participants in an important undercover mission to kill Trotsky. Ramon is sent to Moscow where he undergoes training and assumes the false identity of Jacques Mornard, the presumed son of a wealthy Belgian diplomat. However, the first attempt to assassinate Trotsky does not go according to plan. The GPU is forced to select a new person to complete the mission. Ramon is designated as the chosen one to carry out Stalin's orders.
