Dare mo Shiranai plot

Inspired by a true 'fait divers', this film tells about the survival instinct of four children - Akira, the eldest, is barely twelve - who are left to their fate by their mother in a small apartment in Tokyo. The children, who absolutely want to stay together and therefore certainly do not want to alarm anyone, have to organize their own small living environment. The outside world does not notice the slow decline of the orphaned family.

Mixed feelings...

Let me start by saying that the kids (Akira in particular) act incredibly well and that the film is filled with countless examples demonstrating the subtlety that I so desire in these types of films. No false sentiment or over-the-top tear-jerking. The purity of the film, the endearing details and the theme, which is always the order of the day in various forms, give enough reason for a lump in the throat.

Still, it did some (slight) detract from my viewing experience. To start with, the playing time, which is just too long. I can tolerate slow cinema in general and I understand that you need time to show the decay, but this print could have been a bit shorter. For example, half an hour. At a certain point it becomes repetitive and simply too little happens. Not always much needs to happen, especially when (as in the first part) most scenes are full of striking details, but when this is less the case at a certain point it becomes too slow.

I also found some things a bit unbelievable worked out. I have no idea how it really went, , but I thought the landlord was very easy going when she saw the kids there. Did she even get the monthly rent? And wasn't Saki (and perhaps Akira too) wise enough to see that action had to be taken long ago? Why wasn't a hospital called when that girl was so ill? Sometimes it just got a little too much for me in this area.

Anyway, all in all a well made (and also nicely shot) film. The aforementioned plus points still weigh quite heavily, so that I eventually come to 3.5 *.

I still remember that as a 14-15 year old I was clicking through on vague forums - we're talking 2006 - and I read the plot + background information of this movie. Intrigued, I turned on my Limewire/Bearshare and three viruses later I was able to watch the film.

Three hours later, the film had already made an indelible impression on me; the structure of the story, the way of filming (it was the first film I saw that built such a direct connection with the children in terms of camera use), at the same time the everyday images of Tokyo (a mythical city that I mainly associated with neon light and millions of people). You can sense that the situation of the children on the one hand has no end, but on the other hand it can only end badly because it is a sliding scale. How different was my situation as a beginning teenager..

After the first viewing, the film was really stuck in my head and a week later I watched it again. A few years ago I saw him a third time, with a broader frame of reference in both film and life itself. I would have given 4 stars, but now that I'm typing this it should actually be 4.5.
