I found the story somewhat boring but I was impressed by Dunst's acting. And that made up for a lot.

“I'm seventeen, I'm supposed to get out of control.”

Friendly. Serious boy and licentious girl fall in love, and of course that causes all kinds of complications. The fact that he is a poor Mexican and she is a rich white girl is the least problem, and that this is not dwelt on too long speaks for the film. In fact, the opposite, because Carlos is constantly told not to let Nicole ruin his future. Hernandez is decent and Dunst is annoying in the beginning, but towards the end you start to understand her better and she becomes a bit more enjoyable. The last part could have gone either way, but the feel good ending fits the movie.

Besides Michelle Williams, I think Kirsten Dunst is pretty much the perfect appearance of the mediocre (but insanely attractive) girl next door aka girl-nextdoor. At Dunst there is a slight depression slant on top that was especially well displayed by Lars von Trier in Melancholia. In this C/B the young Dunst was allowed to play a role that suits her extremely well; the lost and spoiled teenager. Opposite was the handsome lad from Mexican poverty. Still, the story didn't become all cliché, although the ending did.

Anyway, not a masterpiece, but a pleasant seat partly because of the beautiful permanent bra-lessness; - )
