"Some things are better left top secret."

The film is based on the memoir of game show impresario Chuck Barris. Chuck Barris seems to be making it big in the 1960s and 1970s. He is a successful television host and meets the love of his life, Penny. At the height of his career, Chuck is approached by the mysterious secret agent Jim, who wants to recruit him for the CIA. Chuck agrees and before he realizes it, he's a hit man for the US government. When his double life is discovered, his own safety is at risk...

Clooney shows himself to be a skilled director with a sense of staging and editing. Based on the book of the same name by game show host Chuck Barris who also wrote Palisades Park, with which Freddie Cannon scored a hit. Did Barris have a big thumbs up or did everything really happen? Anyway, the CIA thought the story was ridiculous. If the latter, it's a nice ego document from a man who, in addition to creating many TV game shows, also made up a life as a hitman for the CIA. Quite genius actually. Sam Rockwell is doing a great job. Threatens to become a type like that, always playing those crazy characters.

Clooney's strong directorial debut.

Been gathering dust on the shelf for a while. Probe, because this is a pretty cool movie. With a Rockwell in shape and a Barrymore as a sidekick, you are easily sucked into the world of Chuck Barris. Laughed quite a few times, like that scene with Pitt and Damon. How dry. Audiovisually, Clooney also has a few tricks up its sleeve, so you won't be bored for a single moment.

Original movie, 3.5*.

films that start with their signature, ie a first scene that reflects the essence of the film, always have a helping hand for me. In 'Confessions...' the first scene is a naked man in a hotel room staring orphaned at a TV while a cleaning maid vacuums the room. Absurd image for an absurd story. The voice over also summarizes it already: someone wants to become famous and great and then discover that this is not the case. Well told story with a thunderous pace but lacks some substance. What is it really about? a cloudy character is not enough. There is then a small slump after ¾ by whining too much about the love affair Barrymore/Rockwell and therefore not in my book of 100 favorite films but nevertheless a fun, inventive and entertaining film.
