The title betrays more than expected. Widow Clicquot and that's what it's all about. Not about the champagne, but about her, her status as a widow and her love life before and after the death of her husband. And that's a shame. Why her champagne became so popular, the entire development process and the effort that took (she occasionally sits at a table late, but it's not really made tangible) are hardly discussed. And the love life is so cliché and dull that it doesn't sparkle for a moment. There is also a strong feminist sauce over it that, although not annoying, seems to have been exaggerated enormously in retrospect. Visually also a bit boring.

The setting is okay, the atmosphere is also okay and I have seen much worse and more boring films but all in all this was a weak beast that does not really convince. 2.0*.

When François Cliquot [Tom Sturridge] suddenly dies, a family feud over his vineyards ensues. Formally, they fall into the hands of his widow Barbe Nicole [Haley Bennett], but a group of men led by François' father Philippe [Ben Miles] has no confidence that she can make a success of the vineyard. Because he has no legal leg to stand on, he accepts the situation as it is, waiting for an incident that will still allow him to get his way. This presents itself when Barbe Nicole starts a relationship with Louis Bohne [Sam Riley], who is given an important advisory role. One of the many recent films about women who break glass ceilings. A neat production with beautiful camera work, but the story is too predictable to stick.

Quite an interesting piece of history, and almost compulsory reading for anyone who has ever had a bottle of bubbles - even if it is only the cheap cava on New Year's Eve, because yes, that is also made according to exactly the same methods that Mrs Clicquot has developed. Not real champagne by itself, because for that the grapes have to come from the region - and yes, contrary to what is often said, I am convinced that that does indeed make a real difference. For real champagne you need not only the method, but also le terroir, the grapes, a good summer, and a family who have been willing to put their heart and soul into a sip of sparkling wine for hundreds of years - largely against their will, because apart from the big brands and the hard commercialism, there are still countless small winegrowers who make their product with great pleasure and dedication and are happy when you come to buy a bottle from them. As a rule, they don't really make a profit from it, that is for the big brands and the globalists, the international concerns that can mix whatever they grab together and sell it under their umbrella.

And in this film we see the origin of it. It is a bit surprising that it is an English film, with English actors and spoken English. Still, the production does justice to the old drink, and a French production (if it ever comes) has a fine example of this that will be a tour to surpass. Because beautiful images, the main characters are strong in their roles, and the story is more or less correct, although it is rolled out a bit too simplistically. After all, it is not a documentary, and while it might have gone a bit too far to introduce some zombies and vampires, this approach is also somewhat boring.
