"The motion picture the world has been waiting for!"

The film tells the story of Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt who seeks to stabilize her power by taking advantage of the tensions in the Roman Empire. She then returns to Egypt, Mark Antony follows her and falls in love with her.

Impressive in terms of production scale (sets, extras, sets, props, costumes and mass scenes). You really imagine yourself in the Rome and Alexandria of that time and that is the power of such a film. And actually the actors are mostly good. But it's not that hard to imagine that you need a workable script and not a 4-hour talk movie (for a movie). Where people were spoiled with major productions such as Ben Hur, Spartacus or the Ten Commandments, which all managed to captivate for over three hours, choices go wrong here. The film doesn't flow very well and hardly gets into a flow. I could divide it like a mini-series into 4 parts, a choice that the cinema audience did not have at the time and it must have been a temptation. And really, they should have just made it into two movies, as was intended. A pity because Cleopatra really has something to offer and is in any case a special production. Still (just about) a 3.5 stars.

Ambitious spectacle film about the story of Cleopatra, whether or not fully historically justified, although the latter does not really matter. The film as a whole is too long-winded and boring at times. There are some beautiful spectacle moments, but the romances are worth yawning.

Actors, however famous and of the most grateful fodder for the tabloid press, could not convince me either. At least had to laugh pityingly at Cleopatra's wink to Caesar.

I'm always up for a long, epic film. But there really was no end to this.

There is simply too little happening in the film. The film focuses too much on her capricious (love) life, and too little on the wars and relationships between her family members. In the film we only see 1 brother of hers, in reality she had several brothers and sisters. In the film, her character is thus strongly romanticized.

Nevertheless, it remains a beauty of a film to watch. I am very interested in history, but I have always deliberately let ancient Egypt pass me by. The film sparked my interest in this period.
