“We all come from the sea, but we are not all from the sea. Those of us who are, we children of the tides, must return to it again and again...”

Great film about surf hero Jay Moriarity. The tragic ending is well known, but it's interesting to see what drives such a young man to risk his life every time. A real thrillseeker, and that it would eventually go wrong was inevitable. The acting is sometimes not too good, and some storylines and characters are very poor. Fortunately Gerald Butler is perfectly cast as a mentor/father figure, and the surf scenes look good too.

Cover is terribly distracting from the story. Been scrolling past this movie for a year, because every time I thought it was about an argument/fight between 2 men plus the fact that it looks like an age-old movie because of the use of color, but 2012 is not that old at all.

Fortunately I decided to sit on it today, because I thought it was really good. Although surfing doesn't interest me, this film captivated me from start to finish. In addition, well acted and Butler is always a pleasure to watch. When I also read that it was true, I was finished.

Glad I watched it. I do judge a film by its cover, so maybe from now on what to do about those covers??

Good and compelling surf drama about Jay Moriarty, who died way too early. Especially the bond between Jay and his mentor Frosty is well illustrated, but on top of that there are some dramatic events that shape his personality. The pursuit of sporting excellence and the unpredictability of life are a good combination here. The images of the turbulent ocean are at times astonishing. The "surf dude" music should not be missing as well as some obligatory stereotypes (the neighborhood bullies and the jealous friend). This is definitely a must for those who like surf movies.
