Captain Corelli's Mandolin plot
The idyllic beauty of Greek Cephallonia is shattered by the invasion of Italian soldiers on the once peaceful island. Captain Antonio Corelli is an indestructible jovial type with a passion for the mandolin. At first, he becomes estranged from the villagers, including Pelagia, the village doctor's daughter. Pelagia, a strong-willed and well-educated woman, is initially offended by the Italian officer's behavior, but gradually becomes sensitive to his charms when they are forced to share her father's home. When Pelagia's betrothed, a local fisherman, joins the army, Antonio and Pelagia's feelings grow stronger.

If you keep your eye on it, this is a very nice film. The cast, pictures and story are well put together.
Also a very different kind of war drama than usual.

Checked this one out, but it wasn't my thing anyway. Maybe too much war or the movie that lasted a little too long, anyway the movie didn't captivate the entire running time. The execution was unexpected.
The cast certainly wasn't bad and I was surprised to find Christian Bale in this, although he didn't really have that big of a role.
Well, I've watched it, but I'm afraid a second viewing will not be in it.

This movie is kind of a guilty pleasure for me. Seen it on DVD a long time ago, but I wanted to see it on Blu Ray anyway. There is now albeit not with Ned. subtitles, but the English subtitles are sufficient. Picture and sound are well taken care of and the soundtrack is simply wonderful to listen to. Personally I like that. They have chosen to do everything in English, albeit with a heavy accent. Real Greeks with broken English, Germans who speak English and Italians with an accent sometimes real Italian. OK so be it.
The star cast is quite large and I do see a few appealing names. Christian Bale for example, but also Irene Papas known from The Guns of Navarone. She will be 92 this year!! Also the two main characters. With Cage it's often all or nothing. Must say he does a pretty good job in Corelli's Mandolin.
Then the film that starts as a kind of folklore (also at the end). If you turn off the film after half an hour, you still have to continue playing it for another hour and a half. He starts out as a dragon of a movie. Where is this going pffff. The middle part is mainly a romantic affair. Although the enemy (Italy) invades, it is all very sweet to each other and they casually enter into a dialogue with each other. Nevertheless, this centerpiece is a feast for the enthusiasts to watch. Especially the Italian music and chants, with or without the famous mandolin, are doing well. The images on this beautiful island do the rest. However, the peace is disturbed when Benito Mussolini falls and the power of the Germans is completely taken over. From then on, the tone is set and the whole thing still gets pretty grim.
Out of the blue (it's impossible) we also see an earthquake (1953) but in the film this is 1947. Perhaps for the story. Another fact in total, in addition to all the executions, nearly 10,000 Italian soldiers were killed.
