The simple story is unnecessarily complex and sometimes makes it difficult to follow. The characters were also not very well developed and their actions rarely make sense. Some raunchy scenes come more or less out of nowhere. Maybe expectations were too high after Oldboy..

What an incredibly grim picture. Revenge in all its ugliness. I thought the director was guilty of effect seeking with the clear intention to shock. That autopsy scene on the child with the accompanying unsavory sounds didn't have to be so explicit and the ending is nice and easy. The tragedy of this story is pretty rudely undermined by betting on horror. I do have praise for the beautiful cinematography: a number of scenes, such as the drowning of the girl, are shot masterfully. And that's just one of those many great scenes that Chan-wook Park excels at.
