Beowulf & Grendel plot

"The Hero. The Monster. The Myth."

Out of loyalty to the Danish King Hrothgar, the Norse Beowulf leads a group of warriors across the sea to free a village from a wandering monster. However, this monstrosity, Grendel, is not a monster with mythical powers, but one of flesh and blood driven by vengeance. Feeling increasingly uneasy about the myth surrounding his person, Beowulf begins to question his mission when he discovers that the king is largely responsible for Grendel's devastating actions. The battle between Good and Evil is therefore not as simple as initially thought.

Surprisingly entertaining film adaptation of the famous Old English poem “Beowulf”. Shot on location in beautiful Iceland. Despite the limited budget, the film looks well done. The filmmakers wanted a film without CGI effects, and that turns out to have been a good move. The sets look great, as do the costumes and make-up. Gerard Butler convinced in his role as Beowulf, and was able to repeat this role a year later in the CGI spectacle 300. In the supporting roles, Skarsgård stands out as the Danish king Hrothgar and Martin Delaney as a Christian priest. Perhaps one of the better films of the famous Old English story.

Entertaining.

To my surprise, Beowulf & Grendel turned out to be a nice snack. The film doesn't take itself really seriously (Grendel is a really lovely caricature) and it has its flaws, but that might make it a bit of a guilty pleasure.

The cast is also more than fine. Gerard Butler in his Scottish rudeness is more funny than heroic and most of the supporting roles are okay too. Only Stellan Skarsgård has not been easy for me, although that may be due to the plaintive nature of his role.

Furthermore, the film presents a lot of beautiful pictures. The costuming is also top notch. With also some typical music choices and a playing time of more than one and a half hours, this is an easy sight, despite the low score here.

What a hilariously bad movie.
It's hard to believe it's from 2005.

Admittedly, it's great that without CGI and with practical effects they still created a kind of fantasy world with even 1x a scare effect that hand that tried to drag someone off the boat .
And there are some passages that come quite literally from the poem/story, the trail of blood from the severed arm would lead Beowulf to Grendel's mother's underwater lair. Grendel is consumed with hatred of happy people, hence the massacres
However, here comes a weird side plot involving a "witch" who has a bond with Grendel.
Butler comes across more as a kind of cowboy with often some weird humor and indeed a lot of fucks and shits. It's a bit of a campy movie now that clearly doesn't take itself seriously.

The fact that Grendel is a kind of primeval man with ditto cries does bring down a lot for me, in the story it is a devilish monstrosity, strange that they made his mother look even more demonic. Once and not again
