Strong Boo.

After Reconstruction his best as far as I'm concerned, although I still have to track down his most recent - also on paper not very promising - film. After seeing Beast one thing has become clear: I have to adjust my former negativity about Nicolas Bro. Where I normally can't stand him, he plays the roof off here. His presence radiates from the screen. His co-star does not do badly either, as does Kaas.

Furthermore an impressive and captivating story. The amorous developments between the two remain intriguing to follow, especially when a somewhat bizarre edge is involved. Something that could have manifested itself a bit more frequently, because however good the film is, Boe keeps his film a bit on the good, modest side. If I were to draw a comparison it would be with something like Possession, and in that respect it wins. But that's just a side note.

Furthermore visually more than competent - as we are used to, but especially the soundtrack is insane. Elegant classical notes, alternated with dark drones and dark ambient. Creates a very penetrating atmosphere, which effortlessly remains from start to finish.

Great work indeed. Intriguing from minute one, sometimes intense, and with a lot of flair. A solid 4.0*, with a chance of a raise.

Mr. Boe is the most talented boy in the class, who can even deliver a stylish picture without too much effort and seems impossible to score a failing grade. Yet that talent (also while watching) creates an expectation, which is less fulfilled here than for example with Allegro.

Thanks to surprising editing, here too a story with a somewhat episodic character. Boe cuts and pastes scenes together in a skillful way so that it sometimes seems as if the chronology is broken, while that is not the case at all. The course of events thus resembles a fever dream; his use of symbolism but also the serene (but random) shots of a snowy city in between reinforce that.

He always creates his own little world with that typical atmosphere, constantly maintains something unpredictable and makes extensive use of threat and paranoia, which ultimately tear a loving relationship apart more and more.

I would have liked to see it go further, get more out of hand, be it in terms of oppression or violence. Some scenes are a bit repetitive, don't build up enough pressure or - when Bro buys a knife - seem to flirt with humor. If horror is your basis, you can use those stylistic elements more.

Charged, magical-realistic drama as we are used to from Boe. Eye-catching, captivating soundtrack and in everything Boe-typical. But ultimately also somewhat conservative (certainly considering the genre), with ultimately less impact. 3.5*

Atmospheric Danish drama film with a number of outbursts towards the horror side, but where director Christoffer Boe mainly knows how to make his own film. He gets a big push in the back from his cast members, because Nicolas Bro, Marijana Janković and Nikolaj Lie Kaas play excellent roles and quickly lift the film to a higher level. The atmosphere is regularly handled well, despite the fact that some scenes seem a bit random and bare. For a long time there is also a bit too little going on, but the pressure is excellently increased as the finale progresses and that ensures an intense ending. Boe seems to be a director with vision and that results in a unique whole with enough idiosyncrasy to stand out and remain memorable. It is a great pity that it has therefore remained relatively undiscovered.
