Denmark, 19th century. Two grown sisters live in an isolated village with their father, a pastor. Their father is the founder of a strict pietistic faith community, a piety movement in the Lutheran Church. One day a French refugee, Babette, arrives. They take her in, where she works as a maid. After their father dies, the sisters organize a commemoration party. Babette manages to persuade them to be allowed to prepare the feast. It will be a time to remember for the villagers.

Babettes Gæstebud is a strong Danish costume drama about a Catholic French woman who lives in the Danish countryside with the daughters of a Puritan pastor. On the occasion of the birthday of this deceased pastor, she is preparing a grand, luxurious dinner.
What is striking about the film is that it does not attempt to tell a spectacular story, but that it sketches a good picture of the time and that an episode from the life of this Danish community is told in a light-hearted way. Which was also well portrayed, especially the dinner.
This is a movie that will make you hungry.

I can't say I liked this movie. If I wasn't a movie buff, I might have given the film even less. Fortunately, I saw some very beautiful photography here, with village and interior scenes that could have been captured in a painting. Every image is so beautiful. Unfortunately, I found the content to be dry and uninteresting. We've known it for a long time: eating together at a restaurant makes us all looser, more talkative, more sociable... In Babettes Feast, the oldies are just less dry than usual. Fortunately, the general was still among them. I didn't expect an orgy, but some laughter and jokes could certainly pass here to make the film end in something more spectacular than the candle being blown out.
