Still a bit underrated film. The story was quite good and was actually quite original. The film is described as a Drama/Comedy, but the ingredients romance and crime also apply to this film. The story actually started as a kind of comedy but as it goes on it slowly turns into a drama with the other two ingredients in it. Besides the fact that the story was quite good, the execution was also more than good and that was mainly due to the nice cast and supporting characters. Max Minghella did a nice and good job as the leading actor and he was perfect for that role. Sophia Myles also did well and she looked very beautiful. The supporting roles of well-known actors such as John Malkovich, Anjelica Huston and Steve Buscemi were also good and convincing, especially that of John Malkovich. He also had the biggest supporting role. All in all, this film pleasantly surprised me and I enjoyed it.

PS The role of Joel David Moore is also more than worth hearing because he did a very nice job and he was perhaps the funniest person in this film.

Nice film in which a boy wants to become a famous artist and starts at art school. The humor is nice and black, comparable to Terry Zwigoff's previous films. The plot only really takes shape late in the film and therefore comes across as a bit forced, but it is an important part of the story (what makes an artist good?).

Certainly not as masterful as Ghost World, but still: an underrated film with enough satirical stabs at the art world and what ails it...it could all have been a bit more focused and sharper, but it is certainly entertaining. I was not annoyed by the main character, especially considering his age, he struggles through an understandably difficult learning period, it is rather Audrey who clearly has a sign in front of her, just like the other art students. And the ending is a beautiful statement that makes it clear that it is more about scoring smartly (at the right time) than about making good art. For example, is anyone still really interested in Micha Klein?

It seems that I don't have to be jealous of those people who have an art education...I can imagine that there are indeed a lot of wannabes and crazy bastards walking around, among the envy-inducing talented people, or the fake students who mainly focus on are looking for free sex...

Zwigoff's worldview is simply too dark and gloomy for most people to pass as realistic...but they still have to learn to take off those rose-colored glasses. If the film makes a few extra cracks with visible pleasure, it has done its job.
