Aniara plot

"A simple trip to mars will become the journey of a lifetime."

Of the several ships launched into space to start afresh on Mars, ANIARA is one designed to meet the needs of a species that has plucked its mother planet: it's a giant shopping mall. When the ship is thrown off course in an accident and its controls are knocked out, these once clever colonizers are less likely to ever reach their destination. Mr. leads a room where a computer allows people to experience near-spiritual memories of the planet. Before the accident, no one is interested. After the accident, the passengers can't get enough. Their fear and aggression drives the computer to depression. Trying to live a meaningful life, Mr. is struck by the changes she is experiencing in the micro-society: from the decline and command of the ship to the rise of deranged cults. The story is based on a poem by Swedish Nobel laureate Harry Martinson.

Very nice. Ambitious project that may take on a bit too much, but that also partly derives its charm. You could almost have filled a separate film with each of the ideas and concepts that come along. Take the whole Mima for example, or the cult that is introduced halfway through.

In any case, it ensures that the film continues to feel fresh. The society on the spaceship is also portrayed quite convincingly. Credible but also atmospheric. Fairly down to earth without too much character development or backstory, but I thought that was a plus. In the last fifteen minutes the atmosphere changes a bit and it all becomes a lot grimmer, with an end scene that is beautiful in all its sadness.

Sometimes the film is tempted to make too easy choices and although it looks consistently beautiful, the audiovisual aspect could have been a little more vibrant. The soundtrack in particular remains a bit too much on the good and safe side. But otherwise quite special. More than 3.5*.

Declining line.

I had high hopes for it after being very intrigued by the poster. I don't often see science fiction films coming out from Scandinavia anymore, so it was only better that this one came in front of me. It starts quite strong, with a number of remarkably detailed and strong effects.

The acting is nice but the characters are idiotic. The first fifteen minutes are extremely fascinating because of some nice ideas, but as the film progresses it becomes more of a psychological commentary on humanity in a strange situation. Apparently that includes crazy things like mating rituals, and then the movie really lost me.

As it progresses, romantic elements were added and once the ritual has been completed, the film only becomes more troubling. How do you actually manage to undermine a film that used to be such a pure genre work in such a strange way? It's almost as if a writer took over the first writer but forgot to erase his work. After a while it didn't make any sense anymore.

I can appreciate it on a visual level, but in terms of content it cannot be far enough from my interests. The fact that I also give it a 2.0* mainly means that it is actually very successful visually. Compliments for that, of course, but other than that the film can't be stolen from me. I hope that next time Scandinavia really delivers something pure within the genre without all that nonsense.

Space horror.

A perhaps more realistic vision of the future than what we hear from the Musketeers, because they think that the grass on Mars is greener than here - and they no longer seem to be able to hear plain facts such as 'there is no grass there at all'. Still, assuming that colonization would one day start, although that would be scientifically unlikely and unwise, I think this film paints a nice picture of that. Quite a few things naturally go wrong, and the deep despair that this film attributes to the characters seems quite obvious to me. More credible than the other party's empty positivism.

Furthermore, I actually found the film a bit disappointing. Despite the fairly limited playing time, I thought it was long-winded and boring, and the time jumping was also a bit too much and unnecessary. And then there's the ending, which in itself is okay that not everything is chewed out, but there is also such a thing as getting rid of it with the proverbial French stroke.

Among the actors, Emelie Jonsson was not too bad, but the rest not really. I did notice that clever use was made of ordinary office buildings and hotels as the interior of the dystopian spaceship. As if we are actually already secretly in this future.
