What a great fun movie the first hour. This is actually a kind of fairy tale and the delightful Garai walks around in the movie as if she just stepped out of a Disney princess movie (think Amy Adams in Enchanted) with an energy, freshness and charm of I have you there (apart from the fact that she looks drop dead gorgeous with that dark hair). Her character writes those typical women's romances and actually this movie is that too. Kitsch, but it suits the movie well. Beautiful surroundings, sets and costumes to top it off. And the supporting roles are also nicely filled with especially an endearing Neill. The second hour is more serious and considerably less fun. The relationship Garai-Fassbender is also not credible anywhere. But it is all still fine to sit through. 3.5*

Started out nice and remained interesting the rest of the film. I sometimes found it rather exaggerated and the travel scenes do indeed look fake, but if that was done on purpose, I think it's fine. The story managed to drag me along somewhat. It was a fairly quick watch, despite the long playing time. 3.5*

Started with fresh reluctance, but actually pleasantly surprised with the beautiful entertaining plot of a self-made writer. With all the grandeur that comes later, rather the approach of a kind of costume drama there somewhere in the background of the First World War.

Angel Deverell reminded me a bit of the character Scarlett from Gone with the wind, a bit conceited and haughty, not very capable of really loving and always melodramatically relating everything to herself. You couldn't always call her sympathetic.

So a great performance by Garai, but we also liked Neill and Fassbender, although there is little chemistry to be found between the latter and Angel. I find Rampling terrible in every film of hers that I see. I just don't like her, that was no different here. I can't help it.
