A sympathetic attempt at making a holocaust film. The holocaust itself is barely visible, but the story is quite interesting. Do not watch Amen if you like to be shocked by images with gassings and the like. Not even if you can't stand it when Germans speak English. Amen is a talk movie. There is little tension and visually not very strong.

Still, Amen begins intriguingly. You follow Kurt Gerstein who initially thinks to spread disinfectants and methods in the Third Reich. It's quite interesting to see how he discovers that his work is being used for something quite different than intended and how he struggles with this. After that it's actually over and you get an aftermath of no less than eighty minutes in which few notable things actually happen. The Christian character started to bother me a bit. As well as the lack of a clear direction. The poster suggests that the Catholic Church is taking some serious blows, but that is not forthcoming. The position of Pope Pius XII receives little attention. Not that I expected heroic deeds here, because I know that The Vatican kept aloof. Amen is too much of a consideration. The ending is very rushed. As if the makers realized that the film had already lasted almost two hours. Suddenly Gerstein has surrendered and the next moment he is dead. Still quite sloppy. Feel free to leave Amen alone unless you like watching movies on this subject. It's not a high-flyer and actually it never really had that potential.

The film is based on the report that Kurt Gerstein wrote, but will be partly fiction.

Whoever says Costa-Gavras thinks of quality, but also of politics. Not all of his films are easily accessible. Think of "L'Aveu", but this one here is clearly narrated.

The movie really captivated me. He shows that the Church did nothing to stop the Holocaust, partly due to the fact that the Pope accepted that Hitler also attacked the communists.

Actors are good in this umpteenth war drama.

A full-blooded talk film, but interesting for those interested in the Second World War. Kurt Gerstein developed the Zyklon B as a pesticide and then found out that his gas was being used against the Jews. Since then, he has used his influence as an SS officer to publicize this plan through the Vatican. Despite the support of a young priest , the Pope does not want to get involved in the Holocaust issue to protect the Vatican from Nazi occupation . Like Schindler, Gerstein was a righteous and faithful man who opposed the final solution from within. Also for his ally, priest Fontana (a fictional character), the idea was unbearable. The film is on the long side and is somewhat repetitive towards the end .. okay we do know that Gerstein really did EVERYTHING he could. Costa Gavras has deep respect for the man and wants his viewer to see him as a martyr, but it is sometimes presented too intrusively. Still, because of the strong content, I only want to lose 3.5 * to it.
