My first encounter with a Thai film was quite enjoyable. A fine horror thriller that is on par with its American counterparts. The story is promising, and there is nothing to complain about the structure, I kept thinking about a 3.5*, but it left me with the feeling that more could have been gotten from this story. It remains a very entertaining and atmospheric horror thriller that is also very enjoyable to watch, an ample 3*.

Typical Asian horror film that was simply seen 15 years too late. The film is solid, but never manages to surprise in terms of scare moments, atmosphere, looks... although the progression can still be called surprising and the twist is certainly a plus. Some implausibilities here and there, but hey, that might be nitpicking. 6/10

Alone is a visually very beautiful film. The pace is a bit slow and the film has many more dramatic aspects than scary aspects. Nothing wrong with that in itself, but both the story and the characters lack depth and originality. When it comes to drama, I especially want to be well served on the first level. The horror is also few and far between. With a few exceptions, the adrenaline level remains quite stable.

The beautiful statues stand upright. Images supported by highly dramatic music. A bit too much of a good thing, as far as I'm concerned. The leisurely narrative style starts to become somewhat irritating after a while. That visual setting is beautiful, but also throw in some pepper. Fortunately, this happens occasionally and has a stimulating effect. However, it happens too little, for my taste.

Alone is not a nasty film. Although not original and slow, the story is generally very enjoyable. The shock moments have less effect. These can easily be predicted in advance, which is a shame. The characters also do little on an emotional level. They are fairly colorless and do predictable things. The main character also looks shocked all the time. At one point I even started paying attention and it was distracting. I was actually curious what she looks like when she's not acting. Or could it possibly be that she has no acting talent and always looks so bewildered. And she suffers from that too.

It is such nonsensical questions that arise while watching. It says a lot about the overall movie experience. It wasn't great at all times.
