Just reviewed 2046 again after watching In the Mood For Love earlier today. First of all, I notice that I like the film even better on review than the first time. Then I thought it was a little long. I am once again overwhelmed by this masterpiece.

I'm going to make a bold statement here and say that not In the Mood for Love, but 2046 is Wong Kar Wai's magnum epic. A film that actually combines all the good things from its predecessor with what made his films from the 90s so exciting. Beautiful sets and truly fantastic cinematography. The camera work and use of color make the film splash off your screen.

All of the muses of WKW come along, with Tony Cheung in top form and Faye Wong in a great role as an android/love-love girl. And then there's Ziyi Zhang. I've said it before, but she's amazing in this movie. Wildly attractive, arrogant, yet so incredibly vulnerable. The chemistry between her and Leung is overwhelming.

Not only visually, but also the soundtrack is again to enjoy. In line with ITMFL, but much more exciting in my opinion. The scenes in the train are already legendary for me, but also those in the hotel. The iconic shot on the roof of the Orient Hotel is a landmark in the Asian film landscape.

Finally, I think the story, which according to some seems to be going nowhere, is a bull's eye. Now that I've seen ITMFL I understand the character Mr. Chow better and I also feel more sympathy for him and his lifestyle. It's not just a womanizer.

2046 is one of the best movies I know. A film that may have been misunderstood. I'm hopeful that over the years people will realize what a timeless classic this is.

The film is very similar to In The Mood For Love and is therefore just as much a confusing love story or quasi-erotic adventure with an unfathomable secret or mystery at its core that I understand as the mystery of love that is also the secret of the other (after all, the question is always whether the other person loves you as much as you love him/her). You can call the film long-winded but again because of the visual and psychological intensity that the love gives to life and here also to the film, the film remains captivating and attractive. The film about the turbulent love life of Casanova Chow is set in the 1960s and the science fiction element is really just a stylistic device for further fleshing out the theme of time and memory: the year 2046 is really just the room number with the travel there like finding the lost memories the room holds: in love, timing is everything, we learn, and Chow let the love of his life slip through his fingers because he was still too much of a player (though the film hopes that love can be found again). What remains – and the year 2046 also refers to the Chinese politics that promised in 1997 that nothing will change for 50 years – is both the eternal return of loving and letting go and the ideal we pursue and that is why we step on that eternal treadmill.

I had recently set up In the mood for love again and it was therefore time to review 2046. Saw it a long time ago and now it has become a bit more film-ripening. But also with In the mood for love in mind, the pieces of the puzzle fall into place more easily.

2046 is a melancholic film about lust and love. About unrequited love and lost dreams. Decorated with the most beautiful colors and camera images, supplemented with appropriate music. The film just exudes poetry and takes you to room 2046 that makes Chow Mo-wan dream, but in the end he knows you can never go back to the past.

A wonderful film that stays with you much more when you review it. For me In the mood for love is even better, but this film shows that the director knows what filmmaking is. Hopefully we can expect a movie from him someday. Fortunately, cinematographer Christopher Doyle has a faster movie tempo.
