Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows plot
"The story behind the master of psychological terror."
In this documentary, Martin Scorsese pays tribute to Val Lewton, the producer of a series of memorable low-budget horror films for the RKO Studios. Val Lewton was raised by his mother and aunt. As a result, his films often include strong female characters who find themselves in difficult situations and who have to mature quickly. He is best known for the horror films he made from 1940 onwards. His first was 'The Cat People' in which he would closely supervise every aspect of the film's completion. Though categorized as a director of horror films, his films never showed a monster and left everything to the viewer's imagination, aided by music, mood and lighting.
