The Twister: Caught in the Storm

The documentary tells the harrowing story of the devastating EF5 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. The tornado, with winds of up to 200 mph, was one of the deadliest in U.S. history, claiming 158 lives and injuring more than 1,000.

Powerful documentary. As someone who loves watching storm chasers, this was an absolute must-watch for me. Of course I had heard of the tornado in Joplin, but the way it is told here — through the eyes of various survivors — is deeply impressive. It is almost unfathomable what these people had to endure. That some of them survived at all is a miracle in itself.

The aftermath also hits hard. It is heartbreaking to see what has been lost, but at the same time it is admirable how the community has risen again. The outside help and the reconstruction give a hopeful note to an otherwise tragic story.

The idea that this could happen every year, I can't bear the thought of living there.

4 stars.
