The Final: Attack on Wembley plot

On July 11, 2021, Wembley Stadium was on the brink of a historic victory for Gareth Southgate's England team. The side had inspired the country on their journey to England's first major final since 1966, and the European Championship was within reach. But as England supporters arrived at Wembley from all corners of the country, the celebration quickly turned into chaos. Drunkenness and drug use took place and fans without tickets saw their opportunity to storm the stadium. This documentary reveals the dramatic story of a day that began with euphoria and ended with a nation left stunned.

It has come a long way when security officials hoped for England to lose in the European Championship final at the legendary Wembley to prevent the out-of-control crowd from turning things into a complete bloodbath. And that was an estimate, because you noticed that they had no control at all and had no idea of what was to come. What if England won and that crowd wanted to enter the stadium (again)? It was also a moment of realization that the safety measures beforehand had failed. Still hallucinating at times. I partly understand it in a moment of celebration and euphoria, but it was becoming extremely dangerous. In retrospect, I have less sympathy for some of the people interviewed. Even afterwards, they are still not aware of any harm.

Quite an interesting documentary, both on a sporting and social level. The pressure on the England team must have been enormous. The links and memories with 1966 were frequently made. And that it still had to come to the absolute pinnacle via penalties...

What followed was some fools' search for scapegoats. The skin color of the three players who were missing was the easiest characteristic to pick them up. Fortunately, there was a quick response from the vast majority of the population who embraced the boys and the entire team.
