"This will change the way you think about 'healthy' food"

Creator Damon Gameau presents himself as a guinea pig, surrounded by the necessary doctors and scientists. The aim of the project is to register the effects of sugar in the body. This will be done through a 6 week diet in which he eats plenty of foods with 'hidden' sugars, with sugar intake equivalent to consuming 40 teaspoons of sugar a day.

Very mediocre.

How those health docs keep coming up with presenters who especially like themselves is a mystery to me. The attempt at a hip presentation may be a way to appeal to a somewhat younger audience, but it mainly distracts from the message and it also radiates little confidence.

This time it's sugar's turn. It's nice that Gameau ignores the easy targets and focuses on "healthy food", but that's about all. It is presented as if half the world is a ticking time bomb and that within two or three generations only 10% of humanity will remain, all and only because of the sugars. In other words, the doomsday image is central again, so that what facts it contains can only be called into question.

Furthermore, a trip to America is too simple, the segment with the aborigines really adds nothing (no, before they ate sugar they will indeed never have become ill) and Gameau's taste is also somewhat implausible. Quite a pity, because I think it's interesting material that certainly has some nice things to do, but with a documentary like this I just can't do anything.

1.5*

Entertaining, slightly too flashy documentary about the dangers of sugar in almost all the food around us. Filmmaker Damon Gameau thinks he's just a little too great and visually the film is so busy that the message repeatedly fades into the background. However, many aspects of the documentary are fascinating and there are funny guest appearances from Hugh Jackman and Stephen Fry, among others. But the rap video at the end... no, it should have been left out.

A slightly too jolly Australian goes on a quest against the sugar industry, in Super Size Me fashion: two months on a (not even extreme) high-sugar diet and see what happens. The outcome can be guessed, so I could do without the 'shocked' reactions. For the rest, the subject lends itself perfectly to a documentary of less than an hour, but for reasons that are unclear, this print is preferably twice as long.

Another reminder that sugar is in everything, including the so-called health foods. Highlights: Stephen Fry and Mrs. Gameau. For the rest: meh.
