Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience plot
'Operation Homecoming' paints a penetrating and detailed picture of the human side of the war in Iraq through the descriptions of American soldiers. At the same time, director Robbins places these experiences in a broader context by juxtaposing them with the universal themes of war literature. The film is based on a National Endowment for the Arts project for which soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan and their relatives wrote down their experiences and thoughts. The result of the project are some 1600 poems, letters, stories, diaries and essays, some of which form the core of the film. Different visual styles depict the different types of lyrics, and moods, which are usually somber and violent but sometimes funny and comforting. The texts are read by actors, including Beau Bridges and Robert Duvall, and the writers themselves. Well-known authors who oversaw the National Endowment for the Arts workshops comment on the soldiers' stories in interviews.
