Na de Lente van '68 plot
In the 1960s, Simon van der Horst, the filmmaker's father, left for Russia to study. In Moscow he falls in love with a Russian girl and in 1968 they get married. Simon, now an engineer, wants to return to the Netherlands with his wife. Then Russia invades Czechoslovakia in the spring of 1968 and promptly the first application for an exit visa is rejected without explanation. There follows a period of four years in which daughter Aliona is born and applications are repeatedly refused. The family even asks for the help of the CPN, but that does not help either. From the letters that Simon wrote at that time and which he now, after thirty years, reads with his daughter, it becomes clear how difficult this time was. When his wife was finally allowed to leave the country, it was actually too late: they had grown too far apart in those years.
