Lon Chaney: A Thousand Faces plot

Documentary about the short life of film legend Lon Chaney. Chaney's talent in the silent film started because his parents were deaf, so he knew how to communicate without sound. Chaney was also known for his makeup, which he always maintained himself.

This documentary about a legendary person certainly had something interesting to say. Was particularly interested in the pieces where they talk about The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Phantom of the Opera. Great classics that unfortunately don't get enough attention. Also found the part where they said something about its history fascinating. Although you can also read that on Wikipedia. The documentary is just pleasant. Only sometimes it could have been a bit more extensive. 3.5.

Excellent and sympathetic look at Chaney's life, roles and working methods, reviewing his most important films and performances. Of course, few Hollywood colleagues were still alive at the time this documentary was made, but thanks to a few seniors who still remember enjoying Chaney's films in their youth (including SF author Ray Bradbury), you can still get a taste something of that time, and a few people (Orson Welles, Jackie Coogan, Lon Chaney junior) still have archive recordings of them talking about Chaney. It is and remains a pity that much of Chaney's work can no longer be seen because a lot of film material was stripped of the reusable silver emulsion by the studio in those years and then ended up in the bulky waste. Fortunately, Chaney's 1925 The phantom of the opera has been preserved, and a bonus disc accompanying its 2013 BFI release also includes this documentary.
