Harry Seidler: Modernist plot
Architect Harry Seidler (1923-2006) escaped the Nazis, emigrated to Australia, which was still isolated at the time, and became the pioneer of Modernism there. His ideas still have a great influence on Australian architects today. Seidler's legacy shows which architecture best suits the sunny Australian climate, inspires through the inventive uses of concrete, and enriches the cities through the squares he introduced into the public space. Seidler was admired, but also regularly caused controversy. He regularly made arrogant and provocative remarks about what modern architecture meant. He thought, for example, that there was not a single architect in Australia who 'makes the heart beat faster'.
