Garuda Power: The Spirit Within plot
This film covers more than eighty years of Indonesian action films, starting with the 1920s and ending with the internationally acclaimed 2014 The Raid 2: Berandal. The documentary shows how the industry took off in the 1930s with martial arts films that were heavily influenced by China and financed by the Netherlands (then still the Dutch East Indies). Then it was the James Bond copies, Tarzan clones, Bruce Lee wannabes and superhero imitations that made the Indonesian action film industry great until its golden age in the 1980s. Collaborations with Western filmmakers ensured that Indonesia's position as a producer of high-quality action films was confirmed for good.
